Practicing Courageous Conversations: Lessons from Israel and Palestine Course at UNC
In Spring 2025, Tom Scott and Simon Greer co-developed and co-taught a first-of-its-kind course at UNC-Chapel Hill that helped students engage across deep divides. Using Israel/Palestine as a focal point, the class created structured opportunities for dialogue where students could develop the confidence and tools to lead courageous conversations on campus and beyond.
In this interactive workshop exclusive to HxA members, Tom and Simon will share highlights from the UNC experience—film clips, student projects, and student/faculty reflections—and then guide participants in practicing the very tools used in the course. Together, we’ll explore how these methods can be adapted for classrooms and campus life more broadly.
Participants will:
- Try out structured conversation techniques for navigating difficult issues.
- Reflect on film clips and discuss how similar approaches could work in their own contexts.
- Leave with concrete practices and frameworks for fostering courageous conversations across divides.
This workshop is designed for faculty and campus leaders who want to move beyond theory into hands-on practice, equipping students to engage productively with controversial issues in the classroom and in life.
